Registration & Renewal

In order to be licensed and legally entitled to practice dental hygiene in British Columbia, applicants must be registered with the College of Dental Hygienists of British Columbia.

Only registrants of the College of Dental Hygienists of British Columbia are licensed and legally entitled to practice dental hygiene in BC and use the title “Registered Dental Hygienist.”

This section provides information on how to apply for initial registration, as well as how to renew your existing registration.

Initial Registration for NEW Applicants

In order to be licensed and legally entitled to practice dental hygiene in British Columbia, applicants must be registered with the College of Dental Hygienists of British Columbia. Registration in any class must be renewed annually, not later than the last day of February.

Annual Renewals

Annual renewal is conducted through the CDHBC website. Notice of the renewal time period is emailed to each registrant in accordance with the bylaws.

Eligibility

Foreign-trained dental hygienists and recent graduates of unaccredited programs and/or educational facilities not approved by the College (approved programs are listed in Schedule I) must successfully complete the CDHBC Clinical Examination before being eligible for registration, unless the applicant has passed a dental hygiene clinical exam in another Canadian jurisdiction, or is/has been registered in good standing within Canada (contact the College for more information).

For more information on the exam and whether you are ineligible, please see CDHBC Clincial Examinations.

Registration Classifications

Depending on your qualifications and professional circumstances, you may apply for different classifications of registration with the CDHBC.

Local Anesthesia Certification will be indicated by "(C)" after the registration class. For example: RDH, (C).

CDHBC offers the following registration classifications:

  • Registered Dental Hygienist Registration
  • Dental Hygiene Practitioner Registration
  • Non-Practicing Registration
  • Visitor (Temporary) Registration

See Registration Classifications for detailed information on each classification type.

Dental hygienists who are authorized and certified to administer local anesthesia (LA) in BC have the indication of "(C)" next to their license class. For example, "Registered Dental Hygienist (C)" or "Dental Hygiene Practitioner (C)". The "(C)" stands for "certified to administer LA". If a registered dental hygienist does not have a "(C)" following their class of registration on their license, they are NOT certified to administer LA. LA certification is optional in BC and must be renewed each practice year in addition to the renewal of the dental hygiene license itself.
