Board Election Bylaw
As part of the College’s continued efforts to meet our mission statement, which is to fulfill the College’s mandate of public protection through regulatory excellence, the College recently amended its bylaws regarding Board Elections. These new changes were designated to foster diversity by bringing a variety of background, knowledge and expertise to the board. These changes will facilitate the election process by ensuring that the Board composition is based on the needs of the Board and that skills, competencies and diversity are the focus of the board member selection process.
Each year the board will evaluate its current make up against a set of pre-determined competencies to identify which competencies are not currently being met or need to be further enhanced. These competencies could include financial acumen, areas of dental hygiene practice, governance knowledge and an understanding of professional regulations.
A Nomination Committee will be formed and will then publish those needs to all registrants and will also be actively recruiting candidates that may fulfill one or more of the needs. These changes will come into effect for the 2021 board election. The eligibility criteria to be nominated for board election has also been enhanced. These provisions will be in place for the 2020 board election.
Any candidate wishing to be nominated must meet the eligibility criteria in the bylaws. Any registrant can be nominated and run for election to the board even if they may not meet the determined needs. It will be up to registrants to cast a ballot for the candidate they feel is best suited to govern the College and thereby the profession in the public's interest. This bylaw will come into effect on September 26, 2019.

Removal of 365-Day Rule Proposed
The Ministry of Health has posted proposed amendments to the Dental Hygienists Regulations. Proposed Amendments to the Dental Technicians and Denturist Regulations respectively have also been posted.
The proposed amendments to the Dental Hygienists Regulations include the removal of the “365-day rule”, the ability for dental hygienists to self-initiate the administration of x-rays and the ability to provide oral local anesthesia without a dentist being on site.
Please click here to view the press release from the Minister of Health regarding the proposed amendments. Please click here to go the Dental Hygienists Regulation page on the Ministry of Health website. Please click here to view the "Proposed Regulation Amendments". Please note that these changes are only proposed at this time - the Health Professions Act requires a three-month consultation period. As such, the current regulations, including the 365-day rule, are still in effect.
The College will take the time to further review the contents and any possible impact on College Bylaws, Practice Standards as well as other policies and programs. Additional communications will be provided in the coming weeks.

Launch of the New Online Learning Plan
In March 2019, the College of Dental Hygienists of British Columbia (CDHBC) announced the redevelopment of the Online Learning Plan (OLP) at the Pacific Dental Conference. Following the 2018 review of the QAP, registrants were asked and provided feedback regarding the functionalities of the OLP software. The College undertook the project of upgrading the OLP.
Guided by feedback from registrants on key challenges with the OLP, CDHBC is pleased to announce the launch of our new Registrant Intranet and Online Learning Plan Platform.
Expanding on the capabilities of the current platform, the new platform improved on the usability of the OLP by facilitating better information management for all registrants.
CDHBC would like to invite all registrants to log in and visit their profile. Several new help resources have been made available in order to help registrants navigate the brand-new Registrant Intranet. Please note that all previously entered information will be displayed in the new OLP. Should you notice any discrepancies within your Required or Self-Directing Learning Plan, please contact the College.

Goal Setting and Reflection on Learning within the OLP (2.0)
With the launch of the new Online Learning Plan (OLP) and the start of another school year upon us, the College felt it was timely to freshen up a previously published article titled Goal Setting and Reflecting on Learning within the OLP - Access, January 2016. Even if you have recently graduated, as a self-regulated professional, life-long learning to remain current in the field of dental hygiene is an ethical obligation.
At the College we are often asked, “Why do I need to write a learning plan?” Our response is that developing a learning plan with goals and actions organizes one’s learning while providing more meaning and a focused direction for professional growth.
