Prorated Interim Insurance Requirement - Did You Know?
The BCDHA/CDHA membership renewal period is well underway, and the College has been receiving regular submissions from registrants providing the College with their prorated interim professional liability insurance certificates, covering the months of January and February 2017. If this two-month interim insurance comes as a surprise, there is a chance that you may have missed the announcement launched at PDC 2016 regarding Streamlined Professional Renewal.
Streamlined Professional Renewal takes effect March 1, 2017, applies to all dental hygienists in the full practicing categories in BC, and will automatically provide professional liability insurance to every dental hygienist. Current professional liability insurance from all providers (eg. CDHA, DHPro, CDSPI) expires at midnight December 31, 2016; in order to ensure you are covered for January and February 2017,
you must purchase an insurance policy from a provider that spans these two months.
If you have questions about Streamlined Professional Renewal, please refer to the
Streamlined Professional Renewal news announcement, and see the
Streamlined Professional Renewal FAQs document for further details. The College also welcomes any questions and/or feedback via phone or
email.

Streamlined Professional Renewal: Your Deposit Plan
During renewal for the 2017-18 registration year, dental hygienists will be paying their registration fees to the College at the
same time as membership fees are collected by the College on behalf of the BCDHA and CDHA. Due to registration and membership fees being combined into one payment at one time, the College has established a refundable deposit plan option for registrants to put money toward their Streamlined Professional Renewal.
There is still time for you to begin putting deposit payments down toward your 2017-18 renewal using your credit card! This system can be accessed under the 'Home' tab or the ‘Make a Payment’ tab, once you have signed in to your registrant profile on the CDHBC website. You can set up an amount and schedule of your choosing. Deposits can be set up either on a monthly basis or even as a one-time payment: any amount accumulated by January 2017 will be put towards the cost of your 2017-2018 renewal. This prepaid deposit amount is completely refundable if you decide to move out of province or cancel your registration prior to renewal.

Preparing to Take the QAP Assessment Tool
Starting in January of 2017, close to 600 CDHBC registrants will be enrolled in the 2017 Quality Assurance Program (QAP) cohort. Once enrolled, registrants have until the last day of February to complete a first attempt of the QAP Assessment Tool. Some registrants entering this cohort may be thinking “How will I prepare?” or “It has been years since I have completed a question-based assessment and that makes me nervous”, or perhaps even simply “I just don’t know what to expect.” Others in the cohort might be thinking “I am going to look at this the way it was intended, and any questions I get incorrect will guide my continuing education over the next 5-year QAP cycle.” Regardless of your approach, this article is meant to provide some helpful information that is meant to assist you as you prepare to take this question- and case-based Assessment Tool.

Inquiry Focus: Communication and Professionalism
Consider the following narrative:
“I recently saw a new hygienist and it wasn’t a good experience. He started my appointment late without any explanation or acknowledgement, and didn’t really explain anything to me about what was happening during the appointment or how my teeth were looking. My gums were bleeding while he was working away, yet he didn’t offer me a rinse until after he’d polished my teeth. I felt as though I was rushed through a drive-thru type of experience that lacked basic communication and consideration, rather than an appointment with a health professional.”
Communication challenges are often at the heart of complaints received by the College from the general public.
