Root of The Matter: Social Media, A Dental Hygienist’s Responsibility
by Jacqueline Guyader, Senior Dental Hygiene Advisor.
It was not so long ago that information was provided to a client in a one-on-one setting, usually face-to-face, or sometimes over the telephone. Now with social media, a whole new platform for information sharing has arrived.
These days if you’re not on Facebook ®, Twitter®, LinkedIn®, Instagram®, Snapchat®, or blogging it seems that you are behind the times and “not in the know”. Social media is a low cost way to market a business and an instant way to spread information and share ideas. As such, there are many benefits for incorporating some aspects of social media in one’s practice; however, there may also be risks involved.
Recently the College released an Interpretation Guideline on Social Media for use by registants. It is essential that all registrants familiarize themselves with the new guideline.

Root of the Matter: 2017 Classification Scheme for Periodontal Diseases and Conditions
by Rebecca Chisholm, Director of Policy and Dental Hygiene Practice.
In November 2017, the World Workshop on the Classification of Periodontal and Peri-implant Diseases and Conditions was conducted jointly by the American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) and the European Federation of Periodontology. The focus of this workshop was to develop a new classification scheme for periodontal diseases and conditions, in order to reflect information from current scientific research and international expertise in the field of periodontics. The new classification scheme replaces the classification system that was previously developed by the AAP and used since 1999.
