Introduction of New Mission Statement and Strategic Plan 2018

As part of the ongoing commitment to regulate the profession of dental hygiene in the public interest, the Board of the College of Dental Hygienists of British Columbia (CDHBC) is pleased to introduce the College's new mission statement: To fulfill our duty to protect the public through regulatory excellence.

Over the past number of months, the CDHBC Board has worked to reframe the College's mission statement to be more reflective of the College’s core business; from that process, the values and goals were also renewed.

The CDHBC Board has also released the College's Strategic Plan 2018 that provides more detail about the mission and values statements through specific goals to accurately reflect how the College engages with the public, registrants and all stakeholders.

Please find the Strategic Plan 2018 here.

QAP Evaluation Report

Amendments to the Health Professions Act required the regulators of BC’s health professions to move beyond conventional continuing education programs toward models that also incorporate methods of assessing practitioners in order to provide the public with a level of assurance of quality practice.

After a number of years of program planning and development, the College piloted its Quality Assurance Program (QAP) in 2012 with an official launch in 2013. Since that time, the College has been committed to gathering feedback and information about the QAP. The information that has been gathered about the QAP has helped to identify areas that are working well, as well as areas that can be further enriched. The College is pleased to release a report on the evaluation of the QAP following the program’s first five-year milestone.

Launch of the Jurisprudence Education Module (JEM)

On March 1, 2018, as part of the College’s Quality Assurance Program (QAP), a newly updated Jurisprudence Education Module (JEM) was launched providing education and information on the legal framework that governs dental hygiene practice in BC including the BC Dental Hygienists Regulation, CDHBC Bylaws, Practice Standards, Scope of Practice and ethical obligations of registrants.

The JEM is an on-line learning module that can be accessed anytime using the most current internet browsers. It is based on an innovative platform for on-line learning called Brightspace with easy navigation and accessibility. The module is organized into 4 broad categories or sub-modules of learning including the College Role, Registrant Responsibilities, Scope of Practice and Practice Resources with relevant sub-topics covered through reading, videos, ‘drag and drop’ type interactive activities, and quizzes. All questions in the quizzes must be answered correctly prior to advancing to the next module.

Registrants will be able to access the JEM through the QAP Cycle-Online Learning Plan page of their CDHBC Registrant Login.

Please click here to visit the JEM page under the Professional Development section of the College website for more information.

Root of The Matter: Blood Pressure Matters Updates

by Jacqueline Guyader, Senior Dental Hygiene Advisor

In March 2017, the College published an article in Access on the importance of monitoring blood pressure (BP) in dental hygiene practice. Since that publication, the American College of Cardiology (ACC) and the American Heart Association (AHA) released 2017 Guidelines for the Prevention, Detection, Evaluation and Management of High Blood Pressure in Adults which replaces the 2003 Joint National Committee on Detection, Evaluation, and Treatment of High Blood Pressure (JNC 7). Of most significant note for a dental hygienist coming from these 2017 updates is the dramatic change for the classification of hypertension.
