Honouring the 215 children, their families and the survivors of the Kamloops Residential School
The College was deeply saddened and appalled to learn of the discovery of the remains of 215 children in a mass grave on the site of the former Kamloops Indian Residential School. We stand with the Tk'emlúps te Secwépemc First Nations and all Indigenous people in BC as they continue to be faced with the trauma caused by the Residential School System. On 31 May, 2021, the CDHBC staff wore orange to pay respect. We know that this is only a small gesture and we must continue to listen, learn and speak the truth before true reconciliation can begin.
As an oral health profession regulator, CDHBC recognizes that over 100 years of medical and dental abuse of Indigenous children in residential schools in Canada has caused deep vulnerabilities in social determinants of health for Indigenous peoples today. Culturally safe care for Indigenous peoples includes awareness of this history and how it impacts health and oral health care services today. Please review the CDHBC Interpretation Guideline on Cultural Safety and Humility found on the CDHBC website here.
As a first step, the College encourages all registrants to complete the San’yas: Indigenous Cultural Safety Training Program if they haven't already done so.

COVID-19 Updates
On May 25, 2021, the Provincial Health Officer (PHO) released an updated four-step BC Restart Plan.
The Oral Health Care During Phases 2 and 3 of the COVID-19 Response document continues to provide current guidance related to the provision of dental hygiene care in which registrants are required to read and follow the expectations within. It is a comprehensive document that covers topics such as ongoing pandemic best practices, personal protective equipment, and infection prevention and control principles and strategies. The four oral health colleges continue to be diligent in their mandate to protect the public and update the guidelines as evidence becomes available or as best practice changes.
Although the Oral Health Care During Phases 2 and 3 of the COVID-19 Response document remains current with its guidelines, it should be noted that restrictions and guidelines released by the Provincial Health Officer (PHO) and the Emergency Program Act (EPA) hold more authority and would take precedence over the College’s guidance document.

Citation for Discipline Hearing
The CDHBC has issued a Citation for a Discipline Hearing to take place on June 22 and 23, 2021.
A discipline hearing is a process that is guided by both the legislation (Health Professions Act) and CDHBC bylaws. A citation happens following an investigation conducted by the Inquiry Committee when they feel that issues at hand are best addressed through a discipline hearing. A hearing is similar to attending court and is a public process.
