New Guidelines for Prophylactic Antibiotics for Clients with Certain Heart Conditions

The American Heart Association AHA has announced changes to their guidelines regarding which patients should take a precautionary antibiotic to prevent infective endocarditis (IE) before receiving dental hygiene services. To view the most recent changes, please visit the American Heart Association.

CDHBC is in the process of updating our guideline Antibiotic Premedication to reflect recent changes. AHA changes affect certain heart conditions only. For conditions other than heart conditions, the current CDHBC guideline is still in effect.

College Bylaws

Amendments to College Bylaws

In accordance with the Health Professions Act, the board of a professional college must establish standards of academic or technical achievement and the qualifications required for registration as a member of the college. Registration may be granted to dental hygienists who have graduated from a dental hygiene education program listed in Schedule I of the College’s bylaws. From time to time newly established dental hygiene programs may be added to Schedule I.

A resolution to amend Schedule I of the College’s bylaws was passed by the Registration Committee of the College of Dental Hygienists of British Columbia on January 11, 2007, and approved by resolution of the Board of the College of Dental Hygienists of British Columbia on January 19, 2007. Accordingly, a request for an amendment which would allow for the addition of two educations programs to Schedule I was forwarded to government for approval on February 5, 2007, as shown below.
